People worldwide have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that all make “Mamma Mia!” the ultimate got-to-see show. Now, “Mamma Mia!” is coming to the Chico Theater Company with an opening Jan. 25 and running through Feb. 24.

“‘Mamma Mia!’ has not been performed in Chico before as it has not been released except to professionals,” director Marc Edson said.  “As soon as it became available, I applied for the rights and got them within the hour.”

“I’ve waited several years to do ‘Mamma Mia!’ since I saw it on Broadway,” Edson said. “I love the music, and our choreographer, Melinda Buzan, is bringing some really cool stuff to the stage. We have a musical ensemble backup on just about every song. If they are not always onstage, they are singing backstage.”

Many people may recall the 2008 version of “Mamma Mia!”, the musical romantic comedy film starring Meryl Streep. It was based on the 1999 musical of the same name.

The story begins on the Greek island of Kalokairi. Young bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan (Talia Rempel) reveals to her bridesmaids, Ali and Lisa (Courtney Barnett and HollyQuick), that she has secretly invited three men to her wedding without telling her mother, Donna Sheridan (Leah Christie). They are the men in her mother’s diary, each of whom could be her father. They are Irish-American architect Sam Carmichael (Tom O’Connor), Swedish adventurer and writer Bill Austin (Bill Petree) and British banker Harry Bright (Michael Walker).

Sophie wants to have her father give her away at her wedding, and she feels that once she meets these men she will know which one is her father.

Donna, who runs a villa as a hotel, is excited to welcome her lifelong friends to the wedding. But when she sees her former lovers, she is shocked and demands they leave. Even she doesn’t know which is the father.

Sophia’s fiance, Sky (Nick Reiner), promises to never leave her as her father left her mother. He is joined by his friends, Pepper and Eddie (Derek Anderson and Ulyses Rameriz). Oscar Magana Jr. plays Father Alexandrios in the wedding proceedings.

“Mamma Mia!” is appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $22, $20 for seniors (age 65 and older), $16 for ages 15 and under.

Tickets are available at the Chico Theater Company box office at 166 Eaton Road. 894-3282. Open noon to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
